We Do Not Exist

Nic Houle

Nic started listening to mewithoutYou in 2006/7 after receiving their first three albums in a music exchange on his iPod. While already a fan of indie, punk, and even some hardcore music (not to mention things like ska and Irish folk music, you know, for the culture), mwY quickly became a go-to for Nic during his last few years of high school.

Nic studied Comparative Cultures & Politics and Social Relations & Policy at James Madison College at Michigan State University. Since then, he’s been interested in the interaction of culture, politics, religion, and science as they relate to our understanding of what it is to be human. After serving two years in AmeriCorps doing micro-agriculture in Lansing, MI, Nic picked up and moved to Cleveland, OH.

Nic’s other obsessions include the works of JRR Tolkien, tabletop roleplaying games, and an ever-growing house plant collection he cultivates with his wife Shannon; they have well over 70 plants. On top of all this, they have a sweet pitbull named Emeline, who will greet guests every morning with ear kisses.

Steven Eiler

Steven Eiler is songwriter, composer, and music educator. He teaches courses in musicology and music theory as well as in songwriting, composition, and audio production. His research interests are in the perception of musical meaning and in the recorded album as an artistic form. He and his wife lead the singing at a tiny church, and they have three precocious children. When the kids are old enough they plan to take them on the road and tour the world as a family band. Until then he’ll keep making podcasts and trying to finish his own long-stalled concept records.

Joel Harrison

Joel started listening to mewithoutYou in 2002 and became a life-long fan after seeing them at The Troubadour in LA in 2004. He has an M.A. in English from the University of Northern Colorado, an M.A. in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in religion from Northwestern University and is Associate Professor of Religion at Northern Virginia Community College. He lives in Manassas, VA. You can sample some of his academic work here.

Joel’s scholarly work is at the intersection of culture, religion, and philosophy, and he is having a blast applying those interests to the mwY catalogue. He also has a record collection of over 1,000 LPs and 7”s and an encyclopedic knowledge of punk, hardcore, post-hardcore, emo and related sub-genres.
